Who is Buddha?
The Buddha was in a Nepalese of royal family, who became the founder of a religious philosophy which to this day bears his name. Actually, it is not his name, but rather it translates to "the enlightened one." He was not even the first "enlightened one." This young Prince was named Siddhartha Gautama. Just after he was born a hermit came to his family's castle, and observed that he would either grow up to be a "Great King" or "a Buddha."
Hindu/Vedic beliefs include a belief in the reincarnation of souls with the intended end of achieving enlightenment, which is called Nirvana. There is no clear acceptance that Nirvana cannot be an earthly state, as in Christianity, which believes that heaven is a post-life state, in some other place.
Siddhartha set out on his quest for the key to enlightenment at age 29 after his own first and only child was born. He spent years following the monks of the Hindus, and learning from them the ways of the monastic life. Through those years as a Hindu monk, he never found a satisfying path to enlightenment, and became quite disappointed that even these Holy Men did not have the answer that he was seeking. After six years with the monks, Siddhartha sat in the shade of a tree and swore not to move from there until he had found the path to Nirvana.
As the story is told, Siddhartha was sitting beneath a tree called the Bo-Tree quite unhappy that he had not found the path to Nirvana through the Yogic practices that he had learned from the group of hermits and monks that he had been studying from. As he sat there, a young woman named Sujata approached him and offered him some food, noting that he appeared to be quite hungry. She placed food before him, begging him to eat. His response was to ask her if she thought the food she was offering would satisfy his [spiritual] hunger. Sujata did not understand the nature of his hunger and claimed that the food would appease his hunger if he would but eat it. He ate the food which she preferred, and began to further contemplate his condition. In the end, he decided that he would not move from that place until he found the way to Nirvana. That night, as he slept, he was tempted to give up his search by several supernatural beings, but withstood their onslaught. When he arose in the morning he had attained Nirvana, and he danced in celebration for a full seven days, before he set out on his journey for the rest of his life telling everyone he met about the way which he had found.
